Fatigue Resistance of Human Articular Cartilage with Reference to Its Regional and Zonal Variations in the Knee Joint

چکیده

Introduction Fibrillation of cartilage has been attributed to failure of the collagen network in its superficial layer [1]. Fatigue of the collagen fibrils, which can only carry tensile stresses, is thus seen as a contributor to the collagen network failure. Previous work on cartilage resistance to fatigue has been undertaken on specimens, which were loaded in the direction of the collagen in the superficial layer and the data obtained were the basis for predictions of the cartilage life, when stressed in a tensile cyclic mode. Such predictions may be overestimates, since the direction along which the specimens were tested is the stronger one [2]. Static tensile testing of cartilage showed it had threefold the strength when tested in the direction parallel to the collagen fibrils than it had in the perpendicular direction [3]. Therefore it is more appropriate to investigate cartilage fatigue resistance in the latter direction, since it is more likely to fail sooner when tested in parallel direction. For completeness, in this investigation specimens of human articular cartilage were tested in both parallel and perpendicular directions to the collagen fibers in the superficial layer. In order to have a wider characterization of cartilage mechanical properties, the fatigue data are compared with the compressive modulus, measured with a classical indentation test.

Experimental Study on Protective Role of NSAID on Articular Cartilage Destruction in Septic Arthritis

Background: Surgical drainage and antibiotic therapy are the cornerstones of treatment protocols in septic arthritis; however, in some circumstances, the diagnosis and initiation of treatment may be retarded by slow disease progression or the time when the patient’s condition precludes early surgery. Therefore, it is beneficial to find ways to reduce the amount of articular injury. This study a...

Mechanical behaviour of articular cartilage under tensile cyclic load.

INTRODUCTION Although fatigue has been implicated in cartilage failure, there are only two published studies in this area, by the same author. However, in these previous studies cartilage was tested in the direction parallel to that of collagen orientation in the superficial layer, where it possesses greater tensile strength. In the present work, articular cartilage was also tested along the di...

Effect of Intraarticular Ketamine Administration on the Histopathological Changes of Knee Joint in the Rat Model

Objective- Postoperative pain management in patients that undergone arthroscopy is one of the most important procedures for their rehabilitation. Analgesic injection intra-articularly can facilitate pain control in such patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of ketamine on articular cartilage in rat model. Save the Meniscus, A Good Strategy to Preserve the Knee

With increasing life expectancy, the demand for preservation of native articular cartilage is increasing to delay joint arthroplasties. In the knee, there are many different strategies to preserve the articular cartilage including but not limited to corrective osteotomies, chondral injury restoration, intraarticular injection of cells or growth factors(PRP). However, One of the most important s...

Mechanism of Boundary Lubrication and Wear of Frictionless Synovial Joint

The natural synovial joints have excellent lubricating ability to provide very low frictional resistance and high wear resistance during various activities of human being. Synovial fluid is having mainly constituents of glycoproteins and phospholipids. Albumin adsorbs over globulin by hydrophobic bonding after formation of globulin coating on hydrophilic cartilage surface and phosphatidylcholin...
